Direct Air Capture Carbon Dioxide – How Does it Work
How does it work?
Large fans the size of a tennis court pull in surrounding air
A solution of Potassium Hydroxide is added which binds with CO2 and traps the molecules as a carbonate salt then processed into pellets.
Pellets are then heated which releases pure Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide is then compressed and now in a state of “supercritical” (a state between liquid and gas) it is injected via a well bore and pipeline below the shale, deep underground and stored permanently. (similar process as hydraulic fracking)
Note – It is uncertain how CO2 will behave underground for very long periods of time.
Companies on track with this method of carbon capture and storage are Occidental Petroleum, Climeworks (Swiss company)
It appears we will need Large Scale Carbon Dioxide Removal efforts to meet the federal government’s carbon emissions goal
