Commodities Hold Strong
Zijin Mining headquartered in China, the stock price has been going up. I have invested for over 40 years in the stock market and from my personal experience, I recognize the same trends occurring over and over. Do you remember the Gold Price run ups? I recall at least 2 different times in the past 40 years, that Gold Price and companies therefore dealing in Gold like Barrick Gold and the ETFs (exchange traded funds) that focus on Gold soared. They were times often when equities (stocks) investment started to not be the greatest market due to stock prices either falling or not making an investor as much as before. To me, and this is my opinion only, the environment today looks similar to the times when Gold and Metals and Commodities went up…
Think about it. Hard items such as land, gold, copper, cocoa, oil, food, livestock offer something in return for a person’s investment dollars. If times are inflationary, as they are now (when a box of cereal at the local market is on sale at $6.99 a box) hard assets are where I like to be. With a commodity, it can’t be taken away from someone as the value is what we perceive it to be and it is based on people or investors not feeling safe. Safety is important in looking at all investment vehicles.
There is not magic wand that can make investments all work out. I have losses and when I do, I sell them. I then take that money and invest it in something that is going up in price and value and I know in time the loss will be eliminated overall. For example, I bought Kodiak Sciences and it went up 27% and then fell more than that. I sold it and lost $165 or so. I then took that same $200 I had and bought Zijin which is about $43 dollars a share.
Why? Well, when the global population is stressed people want safety and often that means buying Gold and with the EV requirements mining companies like Zijin should do well as they mine for many minerals. Another good thing that I do is look at the Copper ETF (exchange traded fund) COPX. I see if that has been going up or down. It is a basket of all copper mining companies overseen by a fund manager.
Overall commodities look strong to me for the rest of this quarter. (April May June 2024). Remember a quarter is 3 months and there are 4 quarters. Jan, Feb, March then April May June then July Aug Sept and lastly Oct Nov Dec and then Annual Year end. All corporation must report so shareholders can see how well a company is or is not doing and can make sound investment decision. We can look this data up for free at each corporation’s website or the SEC website as well as the online broker we use usually has a section.
